The government will release its reserves of eggs and chicken to help stabilize their prices which remain high despite no new reports of bird flu cases.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said on Wednesday that it will monitor price changes for a while and will supply four or five million eggs at prices more than 30 percent lower than the market price for two weeks from early next month if necessary.
It will release two-thousand-100 tons of chicken, an amount that can be domestically consumed in one or two days, for prices more than 50 percent lower than market prices starting from May 31st. The ministry will also encourage the quick release of six-thousand-tons of chicken from the civilian sector.
A ministry official expressed expectations that egg prices will stabilize soon once Thai imports arrive. He said that the government will continue to monitor price changes and conduct on-site inspections to prevent hoarding by distributors and sellers.
