Samsung Electronics has returned to the top of the global smartphone market even ahead of the release of its latest Galaxy S8.

According to data from industry tracker IDC, Samsung sold around seven-point-nine million smartphones in the first quarter for a market share of 22-point-eight percent. 

Archrival Apple followed with a 14-point-nine percent share. Apple held the top market spot in the fourth quarter of last year.
