U.S. May Take Protective Trade Actions

The U.S. secretary of commerce says that the Donald Trump administration may undertake trade actions to protect the U.S.’ aluminum, semiconductor and shipbuilding industries.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, Secretary Wilbur Ross said that those industries could qualify for protection under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, which lets the president impose restrictions on imports for reasons of national security.

Regarding the renegotiations of the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement, he said that the U.S. might reopen a bilateral deal with South Korea.

In a news briefing held at the White House on the same day, Ross said that five years have passed since the Korea-U.S. trade pact was signed and an appropriate time has come to review what to do or what not to do.
