USTR Nominee Makes Issue of S. Korea’s Trade Surplus with U.S.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s nominee for trade representative has raised the issue of the U.S.’ trade deficit with South Korea and Mexico.

Robert Lighthizer said in a Senate confirmation hearing on Tuesday that South Korea and Mexico are representative countries that post a large trade surplus with the U.S.

He added that the U.S. enjoys trade surplus with Canada, Australia and Singapore, while posting occasional surplus or deficit with many other countries.

In relation, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement is at risk.

Reporting on Lighthizer’s remarks and a celebration to mark the fifth anniversary of the trade pact in Seoul, the business newspaper said South Korea is worried that the U.S. will try to renegotiate or even abolish the hard-fought agreement.
