BOK to Launch Project to Reduce Use of Coins

The Bank of Korea plans to launch a pilot project to sharply reduce the use of coins and ultimately realize a coinless society.

Starting next month, consumers can transfer small change from purchases of goods onto their credit cards at convenience stores nationwide.

With fewer and fewer people actually using coins in transaction, the central bank only manages to collect about ten percent of the coins in circulation each year.

Annual coin production costs are estimated at about 60 billion won.
