Nielsen Korea: S. Korea's Consumer Confidence Lowest in World

A global survey has shown that South Koreans hold the most negative view about the economy in the world.

According to Nielsen Korea on Monday, South Korea’s consumer confidence index was 43 in the fourth quarter of last year, the lowest of the 63 countries surveyed.

A reading above 100 means those who view the economy positively outnumber those who view it negatively. A reading below 100 means the pessimists outnumber the optimists.

South Korea’s consumer confidence index has remained at the bottom of the Nielsen list since the second quarter of 2015, hovering below 50 for seven consecutive quarters.

South Korea’s index fell by three points from the third quarter, while the global average index rose by two points during the same period.

Thirty-three percent of those surveyed chose the economy as their biggest concern. Both job security and health were second, with 24 percent, while 17 percent chose balance between work and life as their biggest concern.
