Annual Rice Consumption per Person Predicted to Drop Below 60Kg

A new report predicts that annual rice consumption will be less than 60 kilograms per person this year, five years after it fell below 70 kilograms in 2012.

The Korea Rural Economic Institute predicted that each South Korean will consume 59-point-six kilograms of rice in the grain year from November 2016 to October 2017.

This equates to a daily consumption of about 163 grams, or less than one-and-a-half bowls, given that one bowl usually holds around 120 grams of rice.

Rice consumption has been steadily decreasing for over 30 years since 1984.

The institute forecast that if this trend continues, the annual per-person rice consumption will drop to 47-point-five kilograms by 2027.
