January Producer Prices Saw Sharpest Growth in 6 Years

South Korea’s producer prices saw the sharpest growth in six years in January.

The Bank of Korea announced on Monday that the nation’s producer price index(PPI) stood at 102-point-17 last month, up one-point-three percent from last December.

The figure is the highest to be posted in 25 months and marks a continuous growth for the sixth straight month. The one-point-three percent increase was also the highest on-month growth to be posted for the month of January since 2011.

The growth in the index is blamed on a surge in prices of eggs as well as raw materials, including oil, iron ore and anthracite. In particular, egg prices more than doubled due to the spread of avian influenza.

Producer prices are a leading indicator of inflation as they are reflected in consumer prices over time.
