'Assassins in S. Korea after High-Profile Defectors'

Rep. Ha Tae-kyung of the Bareun Party says that two North Korean assassins have sneaked into South Korea to kill former North Korean government officials who defected to South Korea.

The lawmaker said in a meeting of the party’s Supreme Council Wednesday morning that he obtained intelligence on the activities of North Korean hitmen in South Korea.

Rep. Ha said that the assassins are also targeting North Korean defectors actively involved with anti-North Korea campaigns along with the high profile defectors.

Ha said that the South Korean government needs to step up the protection of high-ranking North Korean defectors against possible assassination attempts, noting similar cases in the past.

Ha also told Yonhap News that former North Korean deputy ambassador to London Thae Yong-ho, who defected to South Korea last year, could be the primary target of the North Korean killers.
