Heavy Snow in Ulleung, Jeju Islands Cause Major Traffic Issues

Heavy snow pounded South Korea’s major islands from late Thursday, causing road closures and other major inconveniences.

Ulleung Island, located some 120 kilometers east of the peninsula, was expected to get up a total of some 70 centimeters of snow.

As of around dawn on Friday, 34 centimeters of snow had fallen over the island. The Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) expects between 20 and 70 more centimeters will hit the island by Sunday.

Due to the heavy snowfall, roads along the coasts of the island and areas downtown have restricted traffic.

In the southern resort island of Jeju, a heavy snow warning was issued in regions near Mount Halla, while a heavy wind advisory was also put in place across the island.

By early Friday morning, nearly 50 centimeters accumulated in mountainous areas of Jeju, while regions along the coastlines also received about two centimeters.

The 1100 Road, which links Jeju City in the North and Seogwipo City in the South through Mount Halla, was closed off to vehicles as of Friday morning. The May 16 Road was also partially closed off.

The KMA said up to 50 centimeters more will fall over the mountainous Jeju areas by Sunday, while coastal regions will receive up to five centimeters more by Saturday.

A heavy wind warning has been issued at the Jeju Airport. Despite some snowfall, however, the airport is functioning without major disruptions.
