Consumers to be Able to Charge Prepaid Cards with Change from April

The Bank of Korea(BOK) will launch a project in which consumers can charge their prepaid transportation cards with the amount of change they get from making a purchase at convenience stores instead of getting the change in cash.

The project will launch on a trial basis beginning from early April.

The central bank is aiming to lessen consumers’ inconvenience in carrying change and to save its coin production costs.

As the second stage of the project, the bank is seeking to introduce a method in which change can be deposited into bank accounts.

The bank is ultimately planning to create a coin-free society by 2020 after expanding the scope of places where such services are available.
