Samsung Electronics Retains Top Spot in Global Smartphone Market

Samsung Electronics and Apple have retained their top spots in the global smartphone market with Chinese firms closely trailing behind.

In a report by U.S. market researcher International Data Corporation(IDC) on Monday, Samsung held on to first place with a 21 percent share in the worldwide smartphone market, shipping 311 million units. Apple ranked second with a market share of 14-point-six percent.

China’s Huawei, OPPO and Vivo ranked third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

IDC said that global smartphone sales posted an on-year increase of two-point-three percent for a record high one-point-47 billion units last year, despite a slowdown in explosive growth in the Chinese, U.S. and Brazilian markets.
