Suncheon Bay Emerging as Key Wintering Site for Hooded Cranes

Written: 2017-02-06 15:00:40Updated: 2017-02-07 10:33:12

The number of hooded cranes spotted in Suncheon Bay in South Jeolla Province topped 16-hundred this winter to post a new record.

The figure is the highest to be posted since 1996 when observation of the wintering cranes first began.

Experts say the rise comes as the habitat has improved in the bay, which is famous for its vast reed fields.

Measuring 22 square kilometers, the Suncheon Bay's mudflats provide a suitable place of rest for hooded cranes, which are state-designated natural monuments.

In a bid to help the birds’ foraging activities, utility poles nearby were removed and the cranes' staple food, unhulled rice, has been provided by residents.

Thanks to the abounding natural environment and the residents' endeavors, Suncheon Bay is emerging as a key wintering site in the world for hooded cranes.
