S. Korea's Food Self-sufficiency Decreasing

South Korea’s food self-sufficiency decreased in recent years.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said on Sunday that the country’s grain self-sufficiency rate posted 48-point-four percent last year, down seven percentage points from 55-point-six percent in 2000.

In the case of grains used for animal feed, the country almost entirely relied on imports last year.

According to the Korea Rural Economic Institute, the country’s beef self-supply rate came to 37-point-seven last year, falling under the 40 percent level for the first time since 2003.

The nation is importing about half of its fishery supplies. Discount chain E-mart said that imported goods accounted for 49 percent of its fishery sales last year, compared to 20 percent in 2010.

The sale of imported fruits in the local market such as American oranges and Chilean grapes are also increasing.
