South Korea says its exports do not appear to be affected, at least for now, by U.S. protectionism or its decision to deploy a U.S. THAAD antimissile system on the Korean Peninsula.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said the country’s exports posted double-digit growth in January for the first time in four years, despite a drop in shipments to the U.S. The government believes the decrease is due to the discontinuation of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 rather than changes in the country’s trade environment influenced by factors such as the THAAD issue and U.S. protectionist policies.
Exports to the U.S. fell one-point-eight percent in January on-year, decreasing for the second consecutive month.
The country’s trade surplus with the U.S. also shrank to about one billion U.S. dollars last month from one-point-seven billion dollars in January of last year.
