Rice Consumption down in S. Korea

Recent data shows that South Koreans consumed one-and-a-half bowls of rice a day on average in 2016.

According to Statistics Korea on Wednesday, average rice consumption a day stood at 169-point-six grams per person last year, down one-point-six percent from the previous year. It equates to about one-and-a-half bowls considering that one bowl usually holds around 100 to 120 grams of rice.

The annual average came to 61-point-nine kilograms, about half the amount recorded in 1986, showing that more people are opting to diversify their diets.

On the other hand, the annual average consumption of flour, beans and other grains like barley increased five-point-seven percent year-on-year to nine-point-three kilograms per head.

But the combined annual consumption of rice and other grains dropped zero-point-seven percent to 71-point-two kilograms.
