KBS has confirmed that the augmented reality game Pokémon Go was officially launched in South Korea on Tuesday.

Multiple sources said the online game was given the green light for registration on the local app market after undergoing several tests.

John Hanke, CEO of Pokémon Go developer Niantic, also visited South Korea last week to finalize deals regarding the launch of the services in the country.

Users of Pokémon Go collect virtual monsters appearing on their Global Positioning System(GPS)-connected smartphones situated in the real world.

It became a global hit last year but its services were not available in most parts of South Korea as the government refused to allow Google a license to use South Korean maps unless it blurs out sensitive military locations from its database.

It was made known that California-based Niantic Labs fixed the problem with its own technology that can allow people to use the game without violating South Korean law.
