Hyundai Kia Automotive Group to Invest 3.1 Billion Dollars in US over 5 Years

Anchor: Hyundai Motor Group has decided to invest three-point-one billion dollars in the U.S. over the next five years. The plan comes amid increasing pressure by President-elect Donald Trump on global automakers to make cars on American soil and boost jobs.

Report: In the wake of President-elect Donald Trump's insistence to impose a "big border tax" on companies manufacturing products to be sold in the United States abroad, Hyundai Motor Group announced a fresh plan to inject three-point-one billion dollars into its U.S. operations.

A Hyundai official says the amount to be injected over the next five years is up one billion dollars from the previous five-year period.

"The investment will go into R&D for ecofriendly and self-driving cars and also for rolling out new models on the regular production line.”

Hyundai says the plan was set prior to Trump’s election, but it was made public at a time when global automakers like Ford, Toyota and GM revealed their plans to boost investment in the U.S.

At present, in Georgia, Hyundai factories are rolling out K5 sedans and Sorento SUVs around the clock and demand is outstripping supply.

Currently, about 46 percent of cars for sale in the U.S. are made in American factories and the rest are imported from Korea.

This means there is enough demand in the U.S. to warrant the greater investment.

Hyundai is also said to be considering building a new factory in the U.S. depending on changes in demand for car models in the U.S.
