The government plans to extend the nation’s highways by some 880 kilometers and build 13 new roads by 2020.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport unveiled on Thursday a five-year plan on major highway projects. A total of 29 trillion won will be invested on the highway expansion project.
As part of efforts to ease heavy traffic, the ministry will build a road linking Ansan in Gyeonggi Province and Incheon as well as a road connecting Geumcheon and Daedeok in South Jeolla Province. A radial road linking Seoul and Yangpyeong in Gyeonggi Province will also be created.
The ministry will expand roads that are often congested, including one linking Gimhae International Airport and Daedong in Yangsan in a bid to cut social costs.
For the smooth handling of logistics that is expected to grow with the expansion of the Gimhae airport, the ministry will set up new roads that connect key hubs.
The ministry said it hopes that the five-year plan will resolve nearly half of the nation's congestion problems and usher in an era where expressways span five-thousand kilometers.
