The Small and Medium Business Administration says the number of newly established companies was up nearly eight percent in November from the same month last year.

That's around eight thousand businesses --- the highest figure ever for the month of November.

More than 21 percent of the startups were in wholesale and retail, followed by manufacturing, real estate and construction.

Economists say the numbers indicate more Koreans are starting businesses to make ends meet amid the prolonged economic recession.
