No. of Self-employed Young Single-Person Households Surges

A new report finds that among young adults who live on their own, more and more are running their own businesses.

According to the report written by Chonbuk National University Professor Moon Seong-man, 12-point-two percent of young single male householders were self-employed. The figure is up four-point-eight percentage points from 2006.

Moon’s finding was published in Statistics Korea’s 2016 report on South Korea’s social trends on Monday.

During the ten-year period, single young men living on their own saw their percentage of earned income out of overall earnings fall from some 87 percent to 75 percent.

Moon explained that the drop in earned income for both men and women and the rise in business income resulted from companies hiring fewer young people.
