FAO to Carry out Agroforestry Project in N. Korea

Voice of America said Wednesday that the Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO) will carry out an agroforestry project in North Korea to address declining farmland and forests in the poverty-stricken country.

The project includes farming, raising livestock animals and planting trees on hills. It also protects the environment and boosts food production.

With a budget of 400-thousand U.S. dollars, the UN agency will implement the project in collaboration with the North’s ministries of agriculture and land and environmental protection over the next two years.

The FAO says North Korea had forests measuring roughly five million hectares last year, down 40 percent from 1990.
