S. Korea to Reduce Rice Paddies Next Year

South Korea plans to grow less rice next year.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced Monday 35-thousand fewer hectares will be dedicated to rice production.

The ministry plans to hold a two-day workshop on Tuesday and Wednesday with rice producers and related local and national organizations to discuss ways of converting rice paddies into fields for other crops.

The decision stems from a chronic oversupply of rice in South Korea, pushing prices down and making it harder for farmers to make a living.
