The Unification Ministry says defectors at a local center will be surveyed on North Korea’s human rights conditions.
Ministry Spokesman Jeong Joon-hee announced on Monday that the Center for North Korean Human Rights Records in North Korea will carry out the survey.
It will be conducted, on a trial basis, on escapees at the state-run Hanawon support center for North Korean defectors.
Jeong said the survey scheduled for Tuesday, will come ahead of a full-fledged fact-finding study on the North's human rights situation that will begin next month. He added the survey will help assess and devise appropriate questions and effective inquiry methods.
The investigation and documentation center's employees will hold one-one-one interviews with ten defectors at Hanawon.
The survey includes some 120 questions, which will help determine if the North committed any violations of international human rights agreements.
Jeong said that based on the results, the center will finalize a questionnaire survey method that will be administered on a monthly basis as part of a systematic survey on defectors who enter facilities like Hanawon.
