S. Korea Secures 340 Tons of Fishing Quota for Atlantic Albacores Next Year

South Korea will be allowed to catch 340 tons of albacores in the Atlantic Ocean next year which is similar to this year’s level.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on Tuesday that the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas(ICCAT) set the quota during its weeklong meeting in Portugal which ended on Monday.

South Korea was granted a 100-ton catch quota for swordfish, also similar to this year.

Albacore and swordfish are considered to be bycatches which are caught incidentally in the process of fishing for bigeye tuna and Bluefin tuna in the Atlantic.

The ICCAT is responsible for the conservation of tunas and tuna-like species in the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas. It has 50 member states, including South Korea, the U.S., Japan and Canada.
