Overseas Card Spending Record High in Q3

South Koreans' credit card spending overseas sharply rose to reach a quarterly high in the third quarter.

According to Bank of Korea data released Friday, South Korean nationals swiped their cards for purchases totaling three-point-eight billion dollars in the July-to-September period, up nine percent from the previous record set in the second quarter. Compared to the same period last year, the figure is up 14-point-six percent.

Given the exchange rate of a U.S. dollar traded at one-thousand-120 won on average in the third quarter, three-point-eight billion dollars is over four-point-two trillion won.

Overseas card spending includes purchases made with debit and check cards as well as credit cards.
