S. Korea Ranks Near Very Bottom Out of OECD States in Social Spending

A new report finds that though South Korea continuously is posting new highs in terms of spending on social welfare, the amount is far smaller than that of advanced countries.

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD) Social Expenditure Database released on Monday, South Korea’s social spending accounted for ten-point-four percent of its gross domestic product(GDP).

The figure placed South Korea at 34th place among the OECD’s 35 member countries. Mexico ranked at the very bottom.

The OECD describes social expenditure as "comprising cash benefits, direct in-kind provision of goods and services and tax breaks with social purposes."

A country whose social spending accounts for a large percentage of its GDP is considered to have a strong social security system.
