Reuters reported on Thursday that Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors have agreed to pay 41-point-two million dollars to settle a lawsuit in the U.S. for exaggerated fuel economy claims for its cars.
According to Reuters, the automakers agreed on the settlement with 33 states and the District of Columbia to resolve inflated fuel economy claims for its cars that were realized in 2012.
The two carmakers, however, refused to admit that they violated any laws.
In 2014, the two agreed with the U.S. Environment Protection Agency(EPA) to pay 350 million dollars in penalties for overstating fuel economy, while forfeiting emissions credits worth around 200 million dollars.
The EPA had investigated the group since U.S. consumers raised suspicions in November 2012 that some of the fuel efficiency ratings for its cars displayed at showrooms were exaggerated.
