Medical and nutritional experts in South Korea are warning against the negative effects of the increasingly trending “low carbohydrate, high fat” diet.
The Korean Society for the Study of Obesity, and four other major medical and nutritional researchers' organizations issued a joint statement on Wednesday.
Calling the diet, "far from any normal eating pattern," they warned that the diet can cause serious health risks and is ineffective for weight loss in the long term.
They stressed that despite their roles as major triggering factors for the development of obesity, carbohydrates and fats are also key energy sources.
The statement comes amid an explosion in the popularity of the “low carb, high fat” diet that promotes cutting out sugars and starches and increasing fats, including saturated fat. The diet craze has become so popular that butter is said to be in short supply and even out of stock in many stores.
