Local Researchers Register 10 Dokdo Microbes

A group of South Korean researchers says it registered the genetic information of ten microscopic organisms discovered on or near the country's easternmost Dokdo Islets with an international database, ahead of Dokdo Day on Tuesday.

The researchers led by Professor Kim Ji-hyun of the Systems Biology Department at Yonsei University said on Monday that they completed the registration process after decoding the genome sequences of the ten microbes.

The microbes include five newly discovered organisms in the waters near Dokdo, such as Dokdonia donghaensis, Sulfitobacter donghicola and Porphyrobacter dokdonensis.

Dokdo Day marks the day when Emperor Gojong of the Daehan Empire officially designated Dokdo as an affiliate of nearby Ulleung Island on October 25th, 1900.
