Samsung First in the World to Open 8GB Mobile DRAM Era

Samsung Electronics has taken a big leap forward in DRAM semiconductor technology that could significantly improve smartphone performance industry-wide.

The company announced Thursday is is ready to supply clients with the world's first 8-gigabyte DRAM memory chips.

DRAM stands for dynamic random access memory.

DRAM chips help devices like smartphones tap into large reservoirs of data very quickly-- a critical factor in helping smartphones and other devices play video.
The new 8-gigabyte chips could allow smartphone performance to rival that of current slim notebook computers.

It also paves the way for smartphones to be able to display ultra-high definition 4K video smoothly.
