S. Korea's Unemployment Rate Hits 11-Year High in September

South Korea’s unemployment rate hit an eleven-year high last month due in part to sluggish exports and the effects of corporate restructuring.

Statistics Korea said on Wednesday that the jobless rate stood at three-point-six percent in September, up four tenths of a percentage point year-on-year. It marks the highest rate for the month of September in eleven years.

The number of unemployed people increased by 120-thousand, while the youth unemployment rate reached nine-point-four percent for the month, up one-and-a-half percentage points year-on-year.

The number of employed people stood at 26-point-five million in September, up 267-thousand from a year ago. However, it marked the lowest rise since May when it increased by 261-thousand.
