Samsung Electronics announced Friday that it posted an operating profit of seven-point-eight trillion won, or nearly seven billion U.S. dollars, in the third quarter of this year.
The amount is up five-point-five percent from the same period last year, but down four-point-eight percent from this year's Q2.
In the second quarter of this year, the tech firm’s operating profit topped eight trillion won for the first time since the first quarter of 2014. But it dropped to the seven-trillion-won level in a quarter.
However, the third-quarter operating profit is over 300 billion won more than forecasts presented by securities companies, which averaged at roughly seven-point-four trillion won.
Industry sources and securities companies analyzed that Samsung managed to recoup a one-trillion-won loss incurred by the massive Galaxy Note 7 recall with greater profits in the semiconductor and display businesses.
