Anchor: The government has decided to pour an additional ten trillion won to invigorate the sluggish economy. The package includes investments by state-run companies and creating funds to help South Korean firms win overseas projects.
Our Kim In-kyung has more.

Report: The government plans to spend an additional ten trillion won, or nine billion U.S. dollars, in the fourth quarter to stimulate the domestic economy.

The government made the decision as part of a set of measures agreed upon at the 15th economy-related ministers meeting on Thursday.

The decision comes on the heels of walkouts at major carmakers, a massive recall of Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 smartphones and the bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping.

In a press release, the Finance Ministry said the South Korean economy has been experiencing fluctuating economic data on consumption, facility investment and exports.

The government will swiftly execute 16-point-six trillion won of spending and a supplementary budget as planned for the fourth quarter. On top of that, it will spend an additional six-point-three trillion won by raising the budget execution rates of central and local governments and local education offices, expanding the supplementary budgets of local governments and investments by state-run companies.

The government will also establish a three-billion dollar package to support South Korean companies win orders for overseas infrastructure projects such as power plants.

State-run companies, including the Korea Electric Power Corporation, will make investments of an additional 500 billion won by the end of this year.

The government has also come up with measures to boost private consumption. For example, services to change credit card points into cash will be expanded at major card companies.

Last year, credit card points worth 133 billion won lapsed while the figure amounted to 68-point-one billion won in the first half of this year.
