A farming technology center in South Chungcheong Province has developed a new variety of strawberries, which is double in size compared to regular strawberries.
The South Chungcheong Province Agricultural Research and Extension Services said Wednesday that it developed super strawberries called “king’s berries” and applied for protection of new varieties of plants with the Korea Seed and Variety Service.
They weigh 30 grams a piece on average and are larger than eggs. They are packed with a sweeter taste and a high level of juice.
Their sugar content is measured at nine-point-eight brix on average, far higher than that of existing varieties called “seolhyang” or “akihime.”
The research center plans to distribute the new strawberries to farmers starting next year after cultivating them on a trial basis at farms.
A researcher at the center predicted that the new fruit will gain popularity among farmers and consumers who prefer big and soft strawberries.
