Nation's 1st Offshore Wind Turbines Begin Operations

The nation’s first offshore wind turbines have begun producing electricity, ushering in an era of offshore wind farms.

Tamra Offshore Wind Power Company on Thursday began operating three three-megawatt offshore wind turbines at waters off Geumdeung-ri in Jeju Island. The three turbines will produce enough eco-friendly energy for some seven-thousand households.

The turbines each have an 80-meter-high steel tower and a blade with a diameter of 91 meters.

Tamra Offshore Wind Power Company plans to install seven more turbines by September next year.

Once all ten offshore wind turbines are set in place, they will produce 85-thousand megawatts per hour, or an amount that can be used by some 24-thousand households.
