Seoul Against Providing Flood Aid to N. Korea

The Unification Ministry has again expressed a negative stance toward providing humanitarian aid to flood-devastated North Korea.

Ministry Spokesman Jeong Joon-hee told reporters on Friday that if such aid is provided from the South or from abroad, the credit will only go to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Jeong also denounced claims by North Korea’s Red Cross that the South Korean government is using the North’s latest floods as a scheme for confrontation.

He said the North should be harshly criticized for its two-faced attitude of trying to get foreign aid through propaganda while not doing anything on its own.

On international organizations’ moves to mobilize help for the North in overcoming flood damage, Jeong said the UN is asking for assistance but the international community has not responded very actively.
