Stranded Hanjin Ships Returning Home to be Exempt from Customs Clearance

The government has decided to exempt Hanjin Shipping container ships from undergoing customs clearance procedures in the event they are returning to South Korea with cargo after being declined entry to ports overseas.

The Korea Customs Service(KCS) said Friday that it will take a special customs clearance measure for the ships owned by the ailing shipping company, such as exemption from regular screening and electronic port clearance.

The special measures will be extended only to inbound Hanjin Shipping vessels returning with incomplete missions as they are banned from entering foreign ports to offload their cargo.

Hanjin Shipping ships are currently banned from entering or leaving some ports in foreign countries as a result of overdue service fees.
