An executive of Volkswagen's headquarters in Germany is being questioned in South Korea over the automaker’s alleged fabrication of emission results.
 
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office on Wednesday summoned the executive, only identified by the initial S, as a witness.
 
Upon arriving at the prosecutors’ office Wednesday morning, S told reporters that he came to shed light on the allegations as a witness and employee of Volkswagen.

S is the first official from the headquarters of the German firm to be summoned for questioning since South Korean prosecutors launched their probe in January.
 
He is also the first official from the Volkswagen headquarters to be under investigation at a country other than Germany amid similar probes under way in the U.S., France and Italy.
 
With an engineering background, S was sent to South Korea in July 2011 to provide an explanation about the Environment Ministry’s finding that Volkswagen vehicles were emitting large amounts of nitrogen oxide. At the time, S was said to have explained that such emission is a common happening and returned to Germany without providing explicit answers.
