South Korea and China will carry out a joint patrol in their provisional measure zone in the Yellow Sea from Wednesday.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on Tuesday that the joint effort will run through next Tuesday.
The South Korea-China Provisional Measure Zone refers to the joint fishing area where the two countries' exclusive economic zones overlap in the Yellow Sea. In the zone, fishing vessels from South Korea and China can fish freely without getting each other's consent. The zone was designated in line with a South Korea-China fisheries accord signed in 2001.
The upcoming patrol, which is the third and last to be held this year, will see the participation of South Korea's one-thousand-262-ton Mugunghwa-Two patrol ship and of the China Coast Guard’s 1303 vessel.
The ships will jointly monitor the provisional measure zone for a week, crack down on ships fishing illegally and inform each other of their inspection results.
South Korea and China began to conduct the joint patrol as a follow-up measure after an agreement reached during their leaders’ summit in June 2013 on boosting bilateral cooperation.
