A new report shows that more than 26 million South Koreans were employed in August this year, up 387-thousand from the same month last year.
Statistics Korea released an employment trend report for August on Tuesday.
According to the report, the number of employees jumped in the wholesale and retail industry, hospitality industry and the construction industry. However, the number of people hired by the manufacturing industry dropped for the first time since June 2012.
The overall employment rate rose zero-point-three percentage point year-on-year to 61 percent. The youth employment rate jumped zero-point-nine percentage point to nearly 43 percent during the same period.
The unemployment rate came to three-point-six percent, up zero-point-two percentage point from the same month last year. The total number of jobless people jumped by 73-thousand, with a conspicuous increase among those in their 20s and 60s.
The youth unemployment rate grew one-point-three percentage points year-on-year to nine-point-three percent, the highest recorded in August since 1999.
The unemployment rate rose one-point-two percentage points in Ulsan and one-point-six percentage points in South Gyeongsang Province due to the ongoing restructuring campaign of the shipbuilding and shipping industries.
