Gov't to Exert Efforts to Widen Outside Info Access to N. Koreans

South Korea says it will work on its own and with the United States to increase North Korean citizens' access to outside information.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Cho June-hyuck said Thursday North Korea remains a closed society, and the influx of outside information can come as a great shock.

His comments were in response to the recent submission of a classified U.S. State Department report to Congress last week detailing methods for increasing the flow of outside information into North Korea.

The State Department report was mandated by the U.S. North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act signed in February by President Obama.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman added that government-level efforts on this front are expected to increase now that South Korea has passed its own North Korean Human Rights Act.
