Emergency Meeting to Open Friday to Discuss Cargo Transport Measures

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will hold a meeting on Friday afternoon attended by logistics industries and domestic ship owners to discuss emergency measures on handling cargo transport after Hanjin Shipping filed for bankruptcy protection earlier in the week.

The meeting comes as the nation’s transport of cargo is likely to see disruptions due to the seizure of Hanjin vessels and delays in the ships’ entry into or exit from ports.

Participants will determine logistics industries’ status of transporting import and export cargo and related problems before seeking joint response measures for such problems.

At the meeting, Oceans and Fisheries Minister Kim Young-suk is expected to call on domestic ship owners to swiftly inject substitute ships and adjust routes to avoid any problems. The minister is likely to ask logistics industries to use domestic shipping firms.

The ministry plans to operate an emergency response team to continuously monitor delays in transport and help logistics companies by establishing a close cooperative system with ship owners to normalize cargo transport.
