Court Accepts Hanjin Shipping's Court Receivership Request

Ailing Hanjin Shipping said Friday that its request to be put under court receivership was accepted by the Seoul Central District Court.

The firm said the court also accepted a request to issue the bankruptcy court order of preservation of its assets and a comprehensive prohibition on arbitrary seizure and has frozen liabilities owed by the shipping firm.

The court measure is intended to prevent a problem of unfairness among its creditors. If the creditors seize the company’s assets, they could dry up before some other creditors take a similar measure.

However, the company’s ships or containers overseas are still vulnerable to being seized in other countries, as local laws may not apply there.

The country's largest shipping line filed for bankruptcy protection on Wednesday after its creditors, led by Korea Development Bank, refused extra funding for the firm's self-rescue plan.
