Strong wind advisories have been put in place for coastal regions along the East Sea since 7 a.m. Wednesday due to Typhoon Lionrock, which despite being downgraded to an extratropical cyclone earlier in the day, still left behind remnants of its strength in South Korea.
The Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) issued a strong wind warning for the East Sea island of Ulleung, easternmost Dokdo and the nation’s five islands near the inter-Korean Yellow Sea border. A wind wave advisory is in place for all waters off the nation’s southern coast.
Lionrock, which passed through Japan’s island of Honshu, was pronounced to be an extratropical cyclone at a spot some 270 kilometers east of Vladivostok at around 3 a.m. Wednesday.
Ulleung Island was hit hardest by the impacts of Lionrock, having witnessed some 400 millimeters of heavy rain during the past four days. Due to the record rainfall, access to some ten roads on the island has been restricted.
Services of passenger ships that travel between Ulleung Island and the mainland were suspended for the sixth day on Wednesday and some 200 ships were ordered to evacuate from ports.
Sailing in almost all waters off the southern coast is still being restricted.
Forecasters say conditions along the coastal areas are expected to simmer down gradually from Thursday night.
