3rd Case of Cholera Confirmed

The third case of cholera has been confirmed in the southern island city of Geoje.

The South Gyeongsang provincial government said Wednesday that it confirmed that a 64-year-old surnamed Kim tested positive for cholera after showing symptoms of diarrhea.

As in the previous two cases, the third patient also consumed seafood from the island.

The province said the Geoje resident, who bought squid and sardines from a market on August 19th, ate them on the 19th and 20th by blanching the squid and grilling the sardines.

Health authorities earlier confirmed the country's first cholera case in 15 years. A 59-year-old man from Gwangju tested positive for cholera after eating seafood in Geoje. The second cholera patient, who lives in Geoje, was found to have eaten defrosted mackerel caught off the coast of the island.

After the third cholera patient was confirmed to have eaten seafood in Geoje, health authorities are inspecting the precise infection route with the assumption that the patients could have been exposed to polluted seawater and seafood.
