Seoul’s presidential office on Wednesday held a National Security Council(NSC) meeting to discuss responses to North Korea’s launch of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) earlier in the day.
Presided over by Kim Kwan-jin, the head of the presidential national security office, the NSC is said to have discussed military and diplomatic responses to the SLBM launch, which is a violation of the North’s obligation under the UN Security Council resolutions.
According to Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff(JCS), the SLBM was fired towards the East Sea at 5:30 a.m. and flew around 500 kilometers before dropping 80 kilometers into the Japanese Air Defense Identification Zone, further than any other SLBM launched by the North so far.
If an SLBM flies for 300 kilometers, it is deemed as a successful launch. The South Korean government is said to be taking the latest North Korean missile provocation very seriously.
