Survey: Job Insecurity Biggest Obstacle to Marriage

A recent survey shows that many single South Korean people regard job insecurity as the biggest obstacle to marriage.

The Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs announced the finding on Thursday after carrying out a survey on two-thousand-383 unmarried people aged between 22 and 44.

According to the survey, 86-point-three percent of single men and 87-point-seven percent of single women answered that government policies to encourage marriage are needed.

Of the respondents, men called for policies to boost youth employment, improve state housing support to newlyweds, discourage ostentatious wedding formalities, shorten long working hours and remove unfair treatment given to married women.

By contrast, female respondents stressed the importance to improve the corporate culture that puts married women in a position of disadvantage at the workplace.

The survey showed that single women are more concerned about gender discrimination against married women at work, although they agree with their male counterparts about the need to enhance job security for young people and boost youth employment in order to encourage marriages.
