The Bank of Korea(BOK) said 50-thousand won bills worth more than 70 trillion won were in circulation in late July, recording a zero-point-eight percent month-on-month growth.
The central bank said it marks the first time the value of the nation’s largest-denominated notes in circulation has surpassed the milestone since the bill was first issued in June 2009.
As a result, 50-thousand won bills accounted for 76-point-six percent of all circulating money worth nearly 92 trillion won, while representing 78-point-seven percent of banknotes in circulation, excluding coins.
In particular, 50-thousand won bills were the sole banknote that posted a growth in use, standing in sharp contrast to banknotes of other denominations.
The amount of circulating ten-thousand won bills dropped one-point-three percent to some 16-point-two trillion won in late July, compared to the previous month. The amount of five-thousand won and one-thousand won notes also fell by zero-point-four percent and zero-point-one percent, respectively, during the same period.
