Airlines to Scrap Fuel Surcharges for 13th Straight Month in September

Major South Korean airlines will not impose a fuel surcharge on international passengers next month amid the continuing streak of low oil prices.

Korean Air and Asiana Airlines said they have set their fuel surcharges at zero for September, marking the 13th straight month of a freeze since September last year.

It is the longest zero streak since July 2005, the first time when fuel surcharges were levied on all international flights.

Local airlines are allowed to impose a certain amount of fuel surcharges to help cover their costs when the average price of jet fuel from Singapore comes to one-point-50 U.S. dollars per gallon or above.

The average price of Singaporean jet fuel stood at about one-point-22 dollars per gallon during a 30-day period from July 16th and August 15th.
